As he transitions into retirement, Robert Hagen reflects on nearly two decades of teaching Field Ecology at KU and a lifetime of learning in environmental biology. In his recent article, Hagen shares insights from a fall 2024 field trip to the Wakarusa River, where KU students conducted stream health assessments alongside local artist Rob Harper-O’Connor, who was painting the same landscape.

Hagen emphasizes the concept of “two-eyed seeing”—blending scientific and artistic perspectives to deepen environmental awareness. His work continues to inspire interdisciplinary learning and was recognized with the 2025 Excellence in Conservation and Environmental Education Award from KACEE.

Robert Hagen was honored with the 2025 Excellence in Conservation and Environmental Education Award by KACEE for his enduring contributions to outdoor learning and interdisciplinary teaching.
